WCW Monday Nitro 6/24/96

The challenge has been accepted and the biggest battle will occur on July 7th at the Bash at the Beach.  Larry and Tony make this stuff sound like the battle for humanity or something.  It's kind of awesome.  We're shown the footage of Bischoff dying for his company.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Gene is in the back with Sting, Lex, and the Macho Man.  All 3 men are in Stinger face paint.  Divide and conquer.  Macho leaves to go take care of some other business.  "We're unified as a team.  WWWCW stands tall."  During this, the Steiners come in.  Scott says they'll watch their backs if need be, but tonight they need to worry about their title match.  Harlem Heat come in and it looks like we've got us a triangle match.  "KNOCK IT OOOOOFFFFF!"

Blue Bloods vs Public Enemy

Now, I don't know what the deal is with PE's music suddenly being a dubbed version when their actual theme has been used on other Nitros.  Because of this, whatever Larry was saying about the Outsiders was cut off, as was a PIP promo from PE.  Regal has already started dancing twice and the cameras barely caught any of it.  Regal and Rocco start.  After getting out of an armbar, Regal dances and we get to see it.  Regal somehow makes a tag while on the floor.  Rocco tries to be agile and show off, but it turns out he's actually not that coordinated.  More Regal nonsense.  So wonderful.  WONDERFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLL.  Regal really is wonderful, though.  Such a joy to watch him work.  We're told that the Outsiders have been spotted near or in the arena.  They still haven't been referred to by name, be it as Razor/Diesel or Hall/Nash.  Grunge hits Taylor in the head with his cast to win.

The Taskmaster vs Kip Abey

I think that was the dude's name.  He didn't get an entrance.  This immediately goes into the stands.  "That's the condiment counter!"  Sullivan tries to throw this dude into the ladies bathroom.  Sullivan got counted out or disqualified.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Jimmy is in the ring with Gene, who is wearing a DOPE seersucker blazer.  Sullivan arrives back in the ring, saying he came to the Horsemen's home town and isn't backing down.  BATB will be in Sullivan's home town.  At BATB, if Sullivan loses, The Giant will have to face a member of the Horsemen the next night on Nitro.  LOUD We Want Flair chants, which were also present at the start of the show.

Bobby Walker vs Dean Malenko WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Tony is nervous about Hall and Nash being in the arena.  He should be.  I like that TMF is becoming a weekly participant again.  Where has Eddie been?  TMF had Walker in the cloverleaf when Disco comes out with his gold record.  Disco has a title shot at BATB.  Dean let it go due to the distraction.  Disco gets the production team to play his music.  Then he gets in the ring to dance as the match is going on.  The match continues as is with Disco dancing on the ropes.  Walker gets bumped into Disco.  Northern lights suplex for the win.  Title retained.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Gene speaks with TMF.  Dean actually speaks!  Disco says they were stinking up the joint and everyone just wants to see him dance.

An excellent BATB promo airs.  Saturday Night has Lex/Rey/Sting teaming up.  Eaton vs Tenta.  Rey in action.

Eddie Guerrero vs Barbarian

Eddie is back and now he has pyro.  He's been tearing shit up in Japan.  Eddie's speed is hard for Barb to handle.  Just wait until Barb kicks his face off.  Barb Bomb!  Just as big of a pump handle slam.  Eddie gets an ugly looking rana and then fires of a Saito suplex.  Oh no.  The super belly to belly.  That move is bonkers.  Eddie went well past the middle of the ring.  Barb then goes for a standard superplex.  Eddie twists very late into the move and lands on Barb for the win.  Barb > Meng all day every day.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Gene takes Eddie back to Uncensored.  He'd like another shot at the US Championship.  He also believes the Outsiders have a lack of respect for WCW and the wrestlers and he'd like to be in the 6 man as well.

Arn Anderson/Chris Benoit vs Rock N Roll Express

There were some technical issues, so it seems like the opening is missing.  Benoit and Morton start.  This is in Charlotte, so there is no way the Horsemen are getting booed for anything.  Tony and Brain and getting me sold for BATB and I've seen it like 10 times in my life.  RNRs both have such terrible hair cuts.  I think they go beyond mullets.  TMF gets a big pop just tagging in.  Mongo drills Gibson in the noggin with the brief case.  Horsemen win.  Joe Gomez (Mongo's grandson) comes out and gets slapped around.  Macho and Kevin Greene hit the ring.  Too little, too late, friends.

TO THE MEAN BY GOD GENE.  Ric is in the back with the locker room with the yaks.  He wouldn't go out to the VIP table because Macho is still being crazy.  The rest of the Horsemen make it back.  Mongo shows off his Super Bowl ring.

DDP vs Alex Wright Lord of the Ring

Tony and Brain talk about the the Hostile Takeover much more than the match, which is okay with me.  It IS a huge match for WCW. The biggest match ever.  They're doing a great job building the atmosphere without having to have Hall and Nash on screen doing stuff.  Their presence is felt even when they aren't there.  Kanyon Cutter for the win.  BANG!

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Gene tells us that DDP will be facing Jim DOOGUN in a taped first match at BATB.  Gross.  DDP's junk is in full force right now.  He claims people are trying to hold him down.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Gene speaks with Kevin Greene.  We're shown footage of the Mongo SWERVE.  After this season, Greene is going Mongo hunting.

VK Wallstreet vs Randy Savage

I think it is weird that IRS's music is a JHV of Love in an Elevator.  Ain't no body want to see IRS.  Come on.  He had overstayed his welcome by 1993 or so.  Macho apparently got his arm fixed as it hasn't been taped for the last 2 weeks.  IRS takes a shot at Kevin Greene.  Greene posts him.  Macho wins with the elbow.

Harlem Heat vs Steiner Brothers vs Sting/Lex Luger WCW Tag Team Championships

Shout out to a show in Muncie, Indiana in July.  A show I attended.  Scott and Booker start the match.  Steiners voluntarily tag Sting in, which makes no sense in a match like this.  Sting is stuck in the ring for a long time.  Hot tag to Lex.  Wait.  OH SHIT.  THE OUTSIDERS ARE HERE AND THEY HAVE BASEBALL BATS.  The ring fills with police.  Hands on guns.  Somehow Harlem Heat got a pin while the ring was full of cops.  New champions.  The Outsiders back away.  Probably good because they were about to get SHOT.
