WCW Monday Nitro 6/17/96

Tragedy has befallen WCW as executive VP Eric Bischoff was powerbombed off the stage by the invading Kevin Nash and Scott Hall.  Eric will not be on the show this week.  We are under alert tonight.  It was the worst thing Tony has ever seen in this great sport.  Rey vs Dean THE REMATCH tonigth!  No Bischoff and TMF vs Rey? Wonderful. WONDERRRRRRRRFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLL.  Larry and Tony give us a run down of the Bash and then we're shown the attack on Bischoff.  War has been accepted.

Stevie Ray vs Rick Steiner

If you ever wanted to know just how big Stevie's dick was, this would be the match to watch, because you can see see the vein.  The two weak halves of their respective teams.  Lariatooo from Stevie.  Rick responds by dropping Stevie right on his head.  Unsafe as fuck.  Rick wins with a Steinerline.  So both of the Steiners have defeated Harlem Heat in singles action, fairly easily.  Booker hit the ring after the match.  Stevie hits a powerbomb.  Book goes for the Hangover.  Scott ran out and put his body in the way, getting hit with an ax handle to the ribs.

Disco Inferno vs Joe Gomez

Disco just wanted to dance.  That's all he wanted.  What a terrible look Joe Gomez has.  If Mongo and Sebastian Bach had a baby, and Eric Roberts and Brian Lee had a baby, and those two grew up to have a baby, it'd be Joe Gomez.  Disco could have won, but he decided to dance.  When he went for the cover, Gomez was able to roll him up for the win.  Disco doesn't even care because his hair is still in place.

TO THE MEAN BY GOD GENE.  Gene is with Ric, Woman, Liz, and now Debra.  They did it for THE DOLLA DOLLA BILLS Y'ALL.  Ric is standing his ground against Macho.  Does that mean he's going to shoot Randy Savage tonight?

Arn Anderson/Chris Benoit vs American Males

"Endomorphic Cyborg Enforcement Unit".  That's Arn.  Benoit's face is all busted up.  The way 3 men will be picked to face Hall and Nash is based on win loss record.  Hulk Hogan called the offices to say he wants put in the running to be picked.  Arn and Riggs begin.  Arn knocks Buff off the apron and then is in for a nasty surprise when he poses on the floor.  It's kind of amazing that Bagwell is in the same spot he was 5 years ago.  Benoit beats the stuff right out of him.  Crowd is 100% on the side of the Horsemen.  As they always are, really.  You hear a smattering of ladies yelling for the Males, but the crowd pops for everything the Horsemen do.  Benoit pins Riggs after dropping him on the top rope and rolling him up.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Arn lays it out why the fans cheer the Horsemen: People like those who say they will do something and then do it.  And the Horsemen always do what they say.

Big Bubber vs John Tenta

"It can't get any bigger than these two guys."  I believe it can.  Your champion is 7 feet, 4 inches tall.  Quake hits a dropkick!  This match is actually longer than the PPV match the night before.  Jimmy hits Quake in the back with the megaphone, which does nothing.  Quake hits a powerslam and pulls off the pin.  He hits another and puts his feet on the ropes for fun.  Bubber gets a loaded sock and goes full Homey D. Clown with it.  God damn.  Right in the fucking face.  The sock was full of coins.  Homey don't play that indeed.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Gene was supposed to talk with Quake, but we get Bubber instead.  He talks about Quake like he was the Big Show.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Macho is the guest in the back.  He's reinstated tonight.

Macho came out for his match and chased Brain away from the announce booth.  Brain ran into the ring and got to do one last hop out of the ring spot.  Still was able to land on his feet, too.

Randy Savage vs Ric Flair

Macho gets Flair in his very first match back?  Ric does a lot of shit talking, which only pisses the already crazy Macho Man off.  Liz slaps him.  Macho uses fruits and vegetables as weapons.  Champagne!  Champagne!  Champagne!  Poured on Ric.  Wtf I think Macho was trying to jam a candle up Flair's ass.  Brain is doing the best at putting over how big of a deal the hostile takeover is.  This match seems a lot more out of control than their normal matches.  Flair tries something off the top.  Macho runs at him and Flair flies over him and takes a weird bump.  Flair decks Macho with an international object.  Ref bump.  Low blow from Macho.  Flying elbow.  He goes up again.  The yaks try to protect Flair.  Macho jumps anyway.  Benoit comes in right into a piledriver.  Arn is intercepted.  Mongo arrives with the briefcase and crushes it on Macho's head.  Flair gets the pin.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Giant, Sullivan, and Hart are the guests.  Sullivan's face is about as messed up as Benoit's.  Apparently these are the end times, as there are wars everywhere.  Giant brings up a valid point: If the Horsemen are the elite group, why aren't any of them the WCW Champion?

We're shown stills of the attack on Bischoff the night before.  Eric was still in the hospital.  We're also shown stills from the rest of the show.  Still to come, we will find out which 3 men will face the Outsiders at BATB.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  Gene is with Rey Jr.  Rey didn't care for the way Dean won the match last night.

Rey Mysterio Jr vs Dean Malenko WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Rey is serious tonight.  It's weird seeing Rey with knees again.  And not bloated with the remnants of a muscle gut.  TMF lariats the piss out of Rey.  Some dope back breakers and belly to backs.  High angle half crab.  We're told there is much more security all through out the building.  Delayed brainbuster.  Jumping electric chair.  God damn what a powerbomb.  TMF.  He then hits a weird capture/fall away/t-bone slam thing.  He is all over Rey.  It heads to the floor.  Dean gets sent hard into the railing.  Rey goes back to the ring and comes out with a springboard rana.  Sunset flip bomb almost gets Rey a title.  Rey gets a few more near falls before getting dropped with a Scorpion Death Drop.  TMF wins.  Title retained.

Scott Steiner vs The Giant WCW Championship

Scott's ribs are taped up from the start of the show.  He almost gets a slam off right away, but he couldn't keep Giant up.  Giant goes right after the ribs.  The biggest t-bone in history!  Scott decides to use the wooden chair.  It breaks this week.  The ref allowed it.  Giant hit the chokeslam for the win.  Title retained.

TO THE MEAN GENE.  We're finally about to hear the big announcement on who will faces the Outsiders at BATB.  The 6 men in the running are Sting, Lex, Hogan, Macho, Flair, and Giant.  The 3 that were chosen were Randy Savage, Lex Luger, and Sting.  Those 3 will represent WCW in this hostile take over.

Definitely a much better show than last week.  I like the atmosphere that Brain and Tony were able to build.  Brain especially makes WCW feel like the whole world is about to explode.  Between the Outsiders invading and declaring war, the Horsemen and DoD gearing up for war, while at the same time everyone uniting to defend WCW.  It's a cool atmosphere, even when Hall and Nash aren't there.  They've done a much better job stirring things up than Pillman ever did.
