WCW Monday Nitro 1/8/96
It's a new year, but things haven't changed. Hulk is ego stroking huge right now. I wonder where Mongo got all his outfits for Pepe. Mongo can't believe how much they're giving away for free. The other group doesn't go that far for their fans. That's kind of what ended up ruining WCW in the end.
Chris Benoit vs Alex Wright
I find it odd that they're trying to act like Benoit is as crazy and out of control as Pillman. Well, he does lariat the shit out of Alex as he's trying to get his jacket off. Pillman is at ringside this week, so presumably he's going to make sure Benoit wins. This loose cannon thing is a bit over hyped. Bischoff is talking about Pillman doing things that could get him banned from WCW, but he really hasn't done anything besides make a lot of weird faces and pick a couple of fights with other heels. Alex hit a cross body from the top to the floor, no doubt ruining his knees. Bischoff's constant WE'RE THE BEST WE'RE THE MOST WATCHED PROGRAM WE'RE SO MUCH BETTER THAN WWF! is getting pretty grating. And for that success, they're thanking the fans with a lot of free wrestling, unlike "Titanic Sports", who are raising their PPV prices. It's crazy that Alex was only 20 at this point. A baby. Pillman trips Wright. Alex dives on him. Both fight over suplexes for like 4 minutes. Benoit wins with a dragon suplex. Pillman spits on Wright after the match. "Don't be surprised if you don't see Brian Pillman in WCW a whole lot longer."
Eddie Guerrero vs Steven Regal
Nice. Regal beat Benoit last week. "Royal Fumble" reference. Why watch that when you could watch Clash of the Champions FOR FREE! There will even be a wedding! Christ, talk about the match and stop talking about WWF and their PPV prices. Eddie tries to use his speed to his advantage, but Regal has the size, power, and mat advantage. Eddie arm drags out of a tiger bomb. It was pretty dope. Regal lands on Eddie's legs from a rana. Looked like it hurt Eddie. SNAP reverse suplex! Regal is such a meanie. I wish he had more stuff in Japan. With dudes from the 80s. Regal of 1995 against Tiger Mask of 1982. Or Misawa of 1992. Or Jumbo of 1985. Wonderful ideas. He throws a lot of forearms and elbows just to be an asshole. Regal is really one of my favorites to watch, despite being physically awkward and not all that agile. He's just...mean for the sake of being mean. I like that Eddie has been put in the ring with guys of so many different styles and looks great against all of them. Dean, Benoit, JL, Pillman, Ric Flair, Regal, Otani. He blends in with all of them. Oh shit, straight up bitch slap! Backslide OUTTA NOWHERE scores Eddie the win. This was fun stuff. I want more Regal. Glad he's been on Nitro after 4 months of being absent.
TO THE MEAN GENE. Sting and Lex are the guests. Sting has a question for Lex. It's about what happened after the triangle match. We're shown some stills. Why did Lex keep Sting on the floor and cost him a possible title win? The reason was because Lex hurt his knee and was trying to have Sting help him up. He wants to form an official tag team at the Clash. Sting is okay with that.
Saturday Night has an interview with Mike Ditka. Apparently the second part. Ric Flair defends his title against Macho Man.
DDP vs Sting
What the fuck, DDP rubs his lit cigar in Sting's face to start the match. That's FUCKING ILLEGAL. Sting dumps him to the floor and hits a pescado. Back in the ring, he doesn't quite make it over on a leap frog. I really wish DDP would connect his hands on the Kanyon Cutter sign. I think he has plastic surgery at some point between here and 1998. Why does he look older in 1996 than he does in 2014? And he looked even older in 1991. That Benjamin Button mother fucker. DDP has been the aggressor. Mostly with a headlock. It's amazing how much different this match would be 2 years later. Sting STINGS UP. Face buster. Stinger Splash. But the Deathlock is too close to the ropes. Brain says that DDP is a main eventer. Dude is deep in a feud with Johnny B. Badd. DDP throws a kick. Sting does a leg trip right into the deathlock for the win. DDP controlled the majority of the match. Sting gives dudes an awful lot for being a top star. Macho, too. Too bad Hogan wouldn't do any of that in WCW. I don't recall him making anyone besides other main eventers look good, and even then really only just Goldberg that one time.
Ric Flair/Arn Anderson vs Randy Savage/Hulk Hogan
The quintessential WWF vs JCP match. Flair wants to start with Hogan. Hulk obliges. Flair tries a test of strength on his own for some reason. It doesn't work. But a crazy loud chop does. Big Boot! Already? Hogan's suspension was such a crock of shit. It was for "the rest of the year", which happened to be one week. He didn't even miss a Nitro. He missed Starrcade. That's it. The title match was booked weeks before the suspension, so I'm guessing Hulk didn't want to be involved with the NJ stuff and said fuck it, and the suspension was how they covered it. The Megamaniacs both have figure fours on at the same time. They are both broken. DDT on Macho! The way Bischoff talks, you'd think Hulk was still the champion. Macho is in most of the match. No one is surprised. God forbid Hulk sell for Arn and Flair. Macho was willing to get the dog shit beaten out of him by unknowns like Norton and Tenzan. Hulk won't make evenmake other top guys look good. This is undoubtedly his worst period for being a selfish cunt. I don't understand what happened to him. In the 80s, he'd sell like death for everyone. The 90s hit and he's the most selfish cunt he can be. And he looks so much worse when Savage, Flair, and Sting give so much to mid carders. Hot tag to Hulk. What a surprise, he dispatches both men with ease. Spinebuster! OUTTA NOWHERE! It doesn't work. It didn't work the last time you tried it, Arn. Hulk pins Arn with the boot and leg drop. Pillman and Benoit tried to hit the ring, but were intercepted by Sullivan and Beefcake. Giant hits the ring and lays out Hogan and Savage. Even in 1996, Hulk took the shittiest chokeslam. Zodiac tries to prevent Giant from going after Hogan again and it works. WE'RE OUTTA TIME!
Nothing announced for next week, since they ran out of time. I don't think there are any plans from week to week anymore. Besides one match, every week seems completely random for the last 2 months or so. They used to give a full line up of next week's show. Now they usually don't give anything. If they do, it's the main event match. A whole lot of plugging of COTC this week. It's the first one since August, so I guess it makes sense. Especially since they're putting that up against the Rumble. There was a lot more shitting on WWF this week than there had been for a while. WE GIVE YOU ALL THIS STUFF FOR FREE, WWF IS RAISING PPV PRICES! Maybe you should hold off on some matches, Eric. Save some for PPV. Nitro has had Hogan vs Flair, Hogan vs Sting, Flair vs Macho, Sting vs Flair (twice), Lex vs Macho, Lex vs Hogan, Arn vs Macho, Arn vs Flair (twice, once in a cage). All of those could have sold some PPVs.
