The Undertaker And His Pals (1966)

PLOT: An undertaker and his two friends, who are restaurant owners, drum up business by going out on the town and killing people; the restaurant owners use parts of the bodies for their menu, and the undertaker gets paid by the families to bury the remainder. Their racket goes awry when 2 detectives suspect that something isn't quite kosher.

What a strange movie. I don't even know how to describe it. I guess it is technically a comedy horror movie. At least a dark comedy for sure. The best way to describe it is WEIRD. The first 8 minutes have no dialogue, and everything has weird filters over it. A group of bikers stop at a phone booth to pick out a random name from the phone book. They then go to the address and kill the woman who lives there.

The movie drops the filter (which is sometimes sepia, sometimes greenish) after they stab poor Sally Lamb. Then they cut her fucking legs off. We're then taken to the funeral home, where the undertaker is this weird fuck who charged about 1000% more than advertised for the work, then starts giving the parents shit because they don't want to pay it. By telling them he could have just given her a youth casket since she was missing her legs. It's so weird. I think it's played for comedy, but I can't even tell. He's a creep, and the 1960s swinging jazz/rock music just makes it weirder. Some fuckery is clearly afoot.

The movie then begins to focus on detective Harry Glass, who is investigating the string of mutilation murders. He takes a date to a diner, which is staffed by fellow creepy dudes who try to serve them leg of lamb that clearly is not lamb. They refuse to eat and leave, and then the woman is killed at her house. Of course, Harry is there to investigate the latest kill. This is apparently the fifth one. The undertaker shows up on the scene trying to get a pay day, to which Harry is not interested in. Then he slips on a skate board and goes on a slapstick scene of almost falling, missing some fellow skateboarding kids, and then falling in the road. Complete with sad trombone music as a kid steals the skateboard. I don't understand what the fuck is going on in this movie. It's so WEIRD.  It's a straight up slapstick comedy scene right after a woman is impaled on a fence after a date.

Things get even kookier after this. The dudes at the restaurant kill a woman. It was an accident, though. You see, the cook was apparently trying to become a doctor, and they had knocked her out so he could work on his surgery techniques. Just straight up cut into her stomach and dug around the insides. It was gross. Of course, she died. So they GROUND HER UP INTO HAMBURGER AND PUT HER ON THE MENU. The leg of lamb earlier? It was leg of Sally Lamb. The donut guy makes his delivery and finds a body in the freezer, so they kill him and serve him up, too. Then the Undertaker shows up, upset that he didn't get to work on the girl, as the deal they had made was that he would get to do work on the bodies that Doc fucked up on.

They decide to kill some other lady at a sauna. This apparently was the wrong place to fuck with, as one of the other women has a gun (that appears to shoot jizz and makes her fuck the world) and ends up shooting the license plate off of the undertaker's bike. From two stories up. With a tiny pistol. A bad joke gets the owner of the diner killed in a vat of acid. Then the undertaker gets the cook killed in a motorcycle wreck after they tried to kill another woman that was around Harry Glass. THEN this fucker goes full on 60s Batman and builds a BOMB in an attempt to kill Harry. The Undertaker is then accidentally killed when a dude casually put an ice pick through a curtain he just happened to be standing behind. To make things even weirder and more confusing, the movie ends with all the dead characters coming back to life with a Bollywood-like song playing.

What a weird ass movie. Cannibalism, mutilation, motorcycle gangs, skateboards, jazz/rock/surfer music. And it's only 62 minutes. Apparently the original cut had a bunch of actual doctor training footage in for shock value (which means the open guts scene might be actual insides) but many theaters refused to show the movie, so it was cut out. Everything about it is so strange. Bizarre tone and dark humor, bizarre music choices for such a movie, weird editing, weird filters. It's just WEIRD.
